The Challenge

Hydra EVC provides EV charging infrastructure across domestic, commercial and public sectors, a category where, until now, almost every competitor has advertised the same way: chargers, kilowatt specs, installation speed, price. It's a market built on parity messaging, where differentiation through product marketing alone is nearly impossible, because every competitor is fundamentally selling the same thing.

Hydra wanted to break that pattern entirely. Rather than producing conventional advertising focused on products and pricing, the brief centred on building an original storytelling campaign that communicated Hydra's mission while reinforcing its position as an innovative company within EV charging, something customers would actually remember, share, and come back to, not just watch once and forget.

Key Pain Points

  • Category Sameness: competing on the same product-and-price messaging as every other EV charging provider, with no distinct brand memory attached to the name Hydra.
  • Three Disconnected Markets: domestic, commercial and public charging serve completely different customers with different needs, but Hydra had no single narrative tying the three together into one recognisable brand.
  • Short-Lived Creative: prior marketing assets were one-off and disposable. A promotional video has a shelf life of weeks, with nothing left over to build the next campaign on.
  • Emotional Distance: product specs communicate what Hydra installs. Nothing communicated who Hydra is or why the brand should matter to a customer choosing between near-identical suppliers.
  • No Scalable Creative Asset: every previous campaign started from zero. There was no underlying brand world that future marketing could plug into, meaning creative costs and lead times stayed high on every single project.

I've sat through a decade of EV charging pitches that all say the same thing: fast, reliable, future-proof. None of it sticks. What SmartFlow brought us wasn't another version of that, it was a character people could actually remember Hydra by. That's the difference between an advert you skip and a brand you talk about.

The Solution

SmartFlow AI proposed a fundamentally different creative strategy: instead of another promotional video, we designed an entirely original branded universe around the Hydra name itself, engineered from the outset to scale across every future campaign rather than exist as a single disposable asset.

Story Development & Narrative Design

The project began not with prompts or footage, but with narrative architecture. Before any visual asset was created, SmartFlow's creative team developed a central mythology establishing Hydra as a character, not just a company name, alongside three distinct serpent personalities, each carrying its own visual identity, temperament and environment, and a five-episode story arc designed so each instalment built on the last, rather than functioning as standalone content.

This mapping was the strategic core of the entire campaign, tying each serpent directly to one of Hydra's real commercial markets:

  • Green, Domestic Charging
  • Blue, Commercial Charging
  • Red, Public Charging Infrastructure

By anchoring fictional characters to real service lines, every future piece of content, a social cutdown, a new episode, a landing page, automatically reinforces both the mythology and the underlying business it represents. Marketing and brand-building stopped being separate workstreams and became the same thing.

AI Image Generation & Character Design

Character and environment development began in Midjourney, used to establish the core visual language of the Hydra universe, the look, colour palette and design of each serpent personality, their environments, and key establishing frames for every scene before any motion was introduced. This gave the production a consistent visual bible to work from rather than reinventing the look scene by scene.

Getting a fictional character to look recognisably the same across 40+ independently generated images is not a single-prompt problem. The team maintained detailed prompt documentation per character, covering colour, proportions, lighting behaviour and framing, refining prompts repeatedly wherever an output drifted from the established design, rather than accepting the first generation that came back.

AI Video Generation & Motion

Once key frames were established, Higgsfield was used to bring the Hydra universe into motion, animating characters and environments into cinematic sequences. This is where much of the technical difficulty in the project concentrated: AI-generated motion doesn't natively behave like traditionally filmed footage, so camera movement, character animation and environmental dynamics all needed careful direction and multiple regeneration passes to read as cinematic rather than synthetic.

Scale, lighting and colour continuity had to be actively preserved across every one of the 40+ scenes, since each was generated independently rather than shot on a single continuous set.

Voice, Sound & Post-Production

Narration and character voice-over were developed using a combination of professional voice recording and voice-changing tools, allowing each serpent personality to have a distinct, consistent vocal identity across all five episodes without needing separate voice actors on set for every session.

All footage, motion sequences, sound and voice-over were then brought together in CapCut and additional editing software for final assembly, transitions, pacing, colour grading and sound design, with each episode built to connect seamlessly into the next rather than standing alone.

What Made This Different

Most AI content projects use generative tools to cut production costs on an otherwise conventional marketing video. This project inverted that logic entirely: SmartFlow used AI generation as the enabling technology for a form of storytelling that would have been prohibitively expensive to attempt through traditional production, a multi-episode fictional universe with a full character roster, distinct environments and a continuous narrative, while still holding the creative bar to cinematic quality rather than treating AI-generated as its own justification.

The result treats Hydra's brand as a compounding asset rather than a disposable one. A single promotional video has a fixed shelf life. A branded universe with defined characters and mapped markets gives Hydra a creative framework that every future campaign, across any of its three markets, can draw on and extend, without starting from zero.

Lessons & Challenges

Maintaining character consistency across dozens of independently generated Midjourney images proved to be the single biggest technical challenge of the project. Small variations in colour, proportion or design crept in across generations, and the team had to build detailed prompt documentation per character to catch and correct drift before it reached the animation stage, treating the character bible as a living production asset rather than a one-time reference document.

Bringing those images to life in Higgsfield surfaced a second layer of difficulty: AI-generated motion introduces its own inconsistencies in camera movement, lighting and environmental scale that simply don't exist in traditionally filmed footage. Several scenes required multiple regeneration passes before movement read as genuinely cinematic rather than uncanny, and the team learned to build in extra iteration time at the animation stage rather than treating it as a quick final step.

Continuity across five separate episodes, produced over time rather than shot in one continuous session, meant lighting, scale and colour grading had to be actively cross-checked scene by scene during editing in CapCut, a discipline closer to matching footage from five different shoots than working from a single set.

Voice consistency was its own puzzle. Getting each serpent personality to sound distinct yet consistent across every episode, using a combination of recorded voice work and voice-changing tools, took several rounds of tuning before each character's vocal identity felt settled and repeatable.

Finally, balancing artistic ambition with commercial clarity required constant judgment throughout the project. A beautiful piece of storytelling that forgot to reinforce Hydra's actual service offering would have been just as much a failure as conventional advertising with no story at all. Every episode was reviewed against that balance before moving to final cut, not just for visual quality.

Business Outcome

The completed campaign gave Hydra EVC a marketing identity that no competitor in the EV charging space could replicate with a conventional video buy. Instead of isolated promotional content with a shelf life of weeks, Hydra now owns a scalable branded universe built to support campaigns across web, social and digital marketing indefinitely, with three markets already mapped into the mythology and ready for future instalments.

Early performance across social channels showed a marked lift in branded engagement compared with Hydra's previous conventional campaigns, with the connected, character-led story format driving significantly higher watch-through and share rates than standard product-led video content typically achieves in the category.

The engagement demonstrated a principle central to SmartFlow's approach: generative AI, used strategically and directed with genuine creative discipline, can build premium brand experiences, not just reduce production costs.
